Frequently Asked Questions

We have compiled the following overview of frequently asked questions to help support parents and carers who may be exploring specialist education for their child. We understand that considering a Special Educational Needs (SEN) setting can sometimes feel overwhelming, and it is natural to have questions or uncertainties along the way.

This section has been designed to provide clear, reassuring and practical information about how our schools operate, the support we offer, and what families can expect throughout the journey. Our top most frequently asked questions aim to alleviate common concerns, provide transparency, and help parents feel confident that their child will be supported in a safe, nurturing and inclusive learning environment.

Understanding Special Educational Needs (SEN)

Every child’s needs and circumstances are unique, and while these questions address many of the topics families commonly ask about, we recognise that you may have further queries specific to your child. We always welcome open conversations with parents and carers and encourage you to contact our team if you would like to discuss anything in more detail.

Ultimately, our goal is to ensure that families feel informed, reassured and supported from the very beginning, creating a strong partnership between home and school that enables every child to flourish.

1. What types of Special Educational Needs does the school support?

Our school supports children and young people aged 11-18 years with a range of Special Educational Needs, including social, emotional and mental health needs (SEMH), autism spectrum conditions (ASC), communication difficulties, and associated learning challenges. Each student’s needs are carefully assessed to ensure our provision is the right fit for their development and wellbeing.

2. What age groups do you cater for?

Our school provides specialist education for young people aged 11–18 years. We support students throughout their secondary education, with a strong focus on personal development, independence and preparation for adulthood.

3. How does a child gain a place at the school?

Most placements are made through referrals from local authorities, typically via an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP). Parents and carers can also speak with their local authority SEN team about whether our school may be suitable for their child.

4. What is an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP)?

An EHCP is a legal document that outlines a child or young person’s educational, health and care needs, and the support required to meet those needs. It ensures that appropriate provision and resources are put in place to support the child’s learning and development.

5. What is the class size at the school?

We maintain small class sizes of aorund 6-8 to ensure that every student receives the attention and support they need. This allows our staff to provide personalised teaching, tailored interventions and consistent pastoral care.

6. What curriculum do students follow?

Students follow a broad and balanced curriculum tailored to their individual needs and abilities. This includes core academic subjects, life skills, personal development, and pathways that prepare young people for further education, training or employment.

7. How do you support students’ emotional wellbeing?

Student wellbeing is central to everything we do. Our approach includes structured pastoral support, therapeutic-informed practices, and a calm, nurturing environment where students feel safe, understood and respected.

8. How do you communicate with parents and carers?

We believe strong partnerships with families are essential. Parents and carers receive regular updates on progress, review meetings, and ongoing communication with teaching and pastoral staff.

9. What specialist support is available?

Students may benefit from a range of support depending on their needs, including targeted interventions, communication support, emotional wellbeing strategies, and personalised learning plans delivered by trained staff.

10. How do you prepare students for life after school?

We focus strongly on preparation for adulthood, including employability skills, independent living skills, and opportunities for work-related learning. Our aim is to help every young person move forward with confidence.

11. Can parents visit the school before a placement is agreed?

Yes. Where appropriate, we welcome visits from parents, carers and professionals so they can learn more about our environment, meet staff and understand how we support our students.

12. How do you ensure safeguarding and student safety?

Safeguarding is a fundamental priority. Our school follows strict safeguarding policies and procedures, and all staff are trained to ensure that students are protected, supported and cared for at all times.
